Artistic Statement

Kota AR is a augmented reality public art installation that is inspired by the stories and architecture of Central Market; established in 1888 by Kapitan Cina Yap Ah Loy.

The AR art installation consists of 4 modules, where each module portrays a story by sellers/traders who traded at Central Market. Stories about chicken sellers, pickled vegetables, pink mini busses of KL and the Klang river will be presented as AR in this installation.

Visually, the art installation takes cues from the elegant Art Deco style facade. The geometric patterns and colours of Central Market is reflected in the floor designs and AR. The physical structures coupled with the Augmented Reality (AR),  presents different layers of stories from Central Market, much like how memories are layered one on top of another, giving a richness of place.

There are 4 sections, where each section has a mini-story about Central market.. Visitors to the artwork scan a QR code and immediately can view 3D stories. Similar to that of how history is appreciateed through layers, the AR aspect of this artwork allows visitors to peel back time to find out what happened on site.
