The Digital Art and Culture Festival made its first appearance in 2011. That three-day event took place at Suffolk House, Penang, and on display were works from animation, video, design, computer programmers and music. Suzy Sulaiman, Exhibition Curator | Simon Soon, University Malaya. This week we consider the humbling lessons from Meratasuara, Projek Dialog's upcoming exhibition that explores the intricacies of engaging with peripherality. How does art broaden (or limit) multicultural understanding? What does it mean to designate a perspective or community as 'marginal'? How do we ensure that a 'process'-oriented project remains creative and rigorous without beholding it to a rigid structure? We reflect on these questions and more with exhibition curator Suzy Sulaiman and comrade Simon Soon. Produced by Fuad Rahmat.
Ian Chow, festival producer | Suzy Sulaiman, artist. With its focus on education, in particular arts education, the festival will not only showcase the variety of performing and visual arts available but also point out the evolution of the local arts industry. The artistic director will share how the events and arts offerings are curated while the artist underscores the part her installation plays. The chairman of YSD, YB Tun Musa Hitam has underscored that education is important as the springboard to develop new creative talents, aside from bridging the existing gaps in the arts industry.
